US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the “removal” of a Canadian drug trafficker convicted in 2022 transporting more than 125 pounds of cocaine nationwide.
The agency said Tuesday that Christopher Anthony Freiter, 32, was returned to Canadian authorities last week after being convicted of drug-related charges in 2023.
In a news release, ICE officials said Frater entered the United States around July 11, 2022.
Frater was driving a rental car from Los Angeles to New York two days later, according to the Nebraska-area U.S. Lawyers’ Office.
“Frater issued an inconsistent statement about the purpose and timing of his trip, which raised officer suspicions,” U.S. officials said at the time.
Police said at the time that the K-9 units were proactively warning of drug smells in the vehicle, prompting searches. Police then found three home depot boxes containing more than 125 pounds of cocaine.
Frater was sentenced to 10 years in a US prison, as determined by a Nebraska court to be a crime of possession with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of a substance or mixture containing detectable amounts of cocaine.
Border officials said they had “residence” and federal convictions returned to Canada “on the basis of his foreign status” at the Ray Brook prison, New York.
Frater rejoined Canada on March 7th from Ogdensburg, New York, south of Ottawa. It is unknown where he will serve exactly the rest of his sentences in Canada.
Since he took over the White House in January, US President Donald Trump has struggled to deport so-called “criminal foreigners” who pose risks to national security.
